The memoir includes a shocking confession of a ten-year sexual relationship with her own father, John Phillips, member and leader of The Mamas & the Papas. Mackenzie explains that she first had sex with her father when she 19, when he tried to stop her from getting married. At the time, they got high and had sex, which she described as rape. Phillips wrote in her book, “I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father.” After this, however, she describes their sexual relationship as consensual. She also reveals details about her drug addiction, including the fact that she was 10 years old when her father taught her how to roll a joint, at age 11 she had her first taste of cocaine, and she dabbled in LSD by age 12. Her drug abuse continued, and by the time she was 18, she frequently injected heroin with her father.
Mackenzie’s book has certainly stirred up many emotions from family members. Her older half-sister, Chynna Phillips, appeared on Oprah one day after Mackenzie, explaining, “Am I exceedingly joyful that my family secret that I told maybe my therapist, my husband and my very best friend in the whole word [is now public]? No.” However, despite her feelings, Chynna supports her sister and admits knowing for 12 years about the sexual relationship. Unfortunately, Mackenzie’s stepmother, Michelle Phillips, was not so supportive and instead accused Mackenzie of being a liar with a mental problem. Mackenzie’s other half-sibling, Bijou Phillips, is also a disbeliever. Their half-brother, Tamberlane Phillips, also commented on the situation, lashing out against the family saying that they are and “always will be a decrepit bowl of dog urine.”
