too good not to share.

Hey guys!  I hope everyone is having an excellent Halloween.  I was watching They Live (Carpenter, 1988) earlier today.  I had never seen it before and was fairly intruguied by the description - a drifter discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see aliens who have taken over the earth.  Plus, it was free and I felt like checking it out.  It does have an 88% on Rotten Tomatos which seemed crazy high, and after viewing it I am really shocked that it had such good reviews.

I watched it and was laughing the whole way through.  It was super cheesy and silly but still fun.  Not scary at all though.  The music and costumes were dated and the whole political message was ineffective.  But I must admit, it had some of the BEST one liners I have ever heard.  I want to share just a few with you...

  • Brother, life's a bitch... and she's back in heat.
  • I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum.

  • The Golden Rule: He who has the gold, makes the rules.
  • You, you're okay.  This one: real fuckin' ugly.

  • You? You look like your face fell in the cheese dip back in 1957.
  • Mama don't like tattletales.
  • That's like pouring perfume on a pig.
Yeah... and there are plenty more where those came from.

  1. Yeah it's classic 80's cheese Sarah but I loved the alley fight scene. One of the best ever. I ended up watching a double bill of The Ring (still creepy) and Scream yesterday.

  2. you gotta love the never ending fight scene. rowdy roddy piper is pretty hilarious. the political message is a bit on the nose (like everything else in the film) but for being made during Reagan's America, I think it's still affective. Carpenter is the man. The black-and-white "obey" "buy" "consume" billboard mind washing is classic.

  3. Monty - Haha yeah the alley fight was crazy. It was fun though. They fought each other hardcore. Oooh The Ring and Scream, nice picks. Sounds like you got your dose of horror flicks on Halloween :-)

Warped Coasters - The end fight scene was awesome haha. I guess the political message is just soooo obvious that it's somewhat affective. The billboard stuff kind of reminded me of 1984. And yes, I agree, Carpenter is the man.
